Douglas Fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii)

Douglas firs have individual short needles (less than 1”) growing in all directions, directly from the stem.  In profile, the tree looks like a Christmas tree, with branches angling up and the top often with a single stem pointing up.

Field ID Tips

·         Needles 1” long, pointy, in all directions from the stem

·         Cones have “mouse tail” between the scales.

·         You can tell you’re near a Douglas Fir when you notice lots of torn up cones around the base of the tree.

·         Christmas tree shape.
